AI vs hand-painted pet portraits
By Tayson O'Hara, Stillbrook Portraits. Updated October 1, 2026.
The short answer
A hand-painted portrait is an original made by an artist over days or weeks. It costs more, takes longer, and no one else can own the same piece. An AI-assisted portrait is a digital illustration made from your photo with AI tools, then printed. It costs less, arrives sooner, and often lets you see it before you pay.
Neither is "better" in general. A painting is the right choice if you want an original work of art by a person. A printed AI-assisted portrait is the right choice if you want a lovely likeness on the wall at a lower price.
We make AI-assisted portraits, so we have a side in this. We've tried to write it fairly anyway.

How they compare
| Hand-painted by an artist | AI-assisted and printed | |
|---|---|---|
| Who makes it | A painter, by hand, in oil, acrylic or watercolor | AI tools make the illustration from your photo; at a good studio a person checks it |
| What you get | An original, one of a kind | A print on canvas or paper; the same image could be printed again |
| Typical price | About $100 to $1,100 for an 8x10, more for larger or oil | About $50 to $150 for a canvas around 16x20 |
| Typical time | 1 to 4 weeks to paint, plus drying time for oil | Often days, plus shipping |
| Seeing it first | Usually a sketch or photo of the work in progress | Often a preview before you pay |
| Changes | Possible, but slow and sometimes extra | Usually quick to redo |
| Likeness | Depends on the artist's skill | Depends on the photo and on whether someone checks it; AI can get markings or ear shapes wrong |

How to tell what you're buying
Some shops aren't clear about how their portraits are made. A few questions help:
- Does the shop say how it's made? A good shop tells you plainly, in the product description or an "about" page.
- Is "hand-painted" consistent with the price and speed? A hand-painted canvas for $50 that ships in three days is very unlikely to be what it sounds like.
- Does "hand-illustrated" or "made by artists" mean painted? Sometimes it means an artist works digitally, sometimes that a person touches up an AI image. It's fair to ask.
- Is there a real "was" price? A crossed-out price that's always there may never have been charged. A real sale shows when it ends.
You deserve to know what you're paying for, whichever kind you choose.
Can I make an AI pet portrait myself?
Yes. Chat assistants and image apps can turn a photo of your pet into an illustration, often for free or for a small subscription. For a phone background or a fun post, that may be all you need.
Where it gets harder is the wall:
- Likeness. AI tools often change small things, like a white patch, the shape of an ear or eye color. Getting it right can take many tries.
- Print size. Images from chat apps are often too small to print sharply on a large canvas without careful upscaling.
- Printing. You'll need to choose a print shop, a size and a crop, and check how it will wrap around the canvas edges.
That's the part a studio does for you: checking the likeness, preparing a print-ready file, printing, and standing behind it if something goes wrong.
When to choose which
Choose hand-painted if:
- You want an original work of art, made by a person, that no one else can own.
- You'd enjoy working with an artist and watching it take shape.
- Your budget is roughly $200 or more and you can wait a few weeks.
Choose AI-assisted and printed if:
- You want a finished portrait on the wall for about $70 to $150.
- You'd like to see it before you pay, and change it quickly if it isn't right.
- It's a gift with a deadline, or you'd like more than one copy.
Try it yourself if: you only want a digital image, and you're happy to spend time getting the likeness right.
How Stillbrook does it
Each Stillbrook portrait is a digital illustration made from your photo with AI tools, checked by a person on our team against your photo, and printed to order by our print partner on gallery-wrapped canvas, as a framed print or as an unframed paper print. We never call it hand-painted.
- You see a free preview before you pay, and only order the version that looks like them.
- A person checks the likeness before it prints, and we make a larger, print-ready version so it's sharp at the size you choose.
- Paper prints from $49, canvas from $89.99, free standard shipping in the US.
- If it arrives damaged or misprinted we replace it, and if it doesn't feel like them we remake it free within 30 days, and refund you in full if it still isn't right.
Questions people ask
Is an AI pet portrait as good as a hand-painted one?
They're different things. A hand-painted portrait is an original work of art by a person. An AI-assisted portrait is a printed digital illustration. A good AI-assisted portrait can be a lovely likeness at a lower price, but it isn't an original painting.
Why are hand-painted pet portraits so expensive?
Because an artist spends many hours on each one. In the price lists we checked, an 8x10 watercolor cost $105 to $190 and an 8x10 oil about $1,075.
Can ChatGPT make a pet portrait?
Yes, chat assistants and image apps can make an illustration from a photo of your pet. Getting a close likeness can take many tries, and the image is often too small to print sharply on a large canvas without upscaling.
How can I tell if a pet portrait is AI or hand-painted?
Ask the shop directly and read how they describe it. Very low prices and very fast delivery for a "hand-painted" canvas are a warning sign. Honest shops say how their portraits are made.
Are AI pet portraits worth it?
If you want a good likeness on the wall at a modest price, often yes, especially when you can see it before paying. If you want an original painting, choose an artist instead.
Is a Stillbrook portrait hand-painted?
No. It's a digital illustration made from your photo with AI tools, checked by a person on our team, and printed to order. We say so on every page.
