Gifts for dog lovers

By Tayson O'Hara, Stillbrook Portraits. Updated October 1, 2026.

The short answer

The best gifts for a dog lover are about their dog. Something with their dog's face or name, or something that makes walks, naps and car rides better, will be used and kept. A generic "dog mom" slogan mug usually won't. If you're stuck, a useful thing for the dog plus a note about how much you like their dog is a safe, warm choice.

We make portraits of pets, so we have a side in this. Most of the ideas below are things we don't sell.

Personal gifts with their dog's face or name

A portrait of their dog. A painting, a drawing or a printed illustration from a favorite photo. Our Royal style (a velvet cloak and a gold chain) tends to get a laugh and then a place of honor. What pet portraits cost

A custom ornament. With the dog's name or a small photo. It comes out every December.

An embroidered or engraved collar, leash or tag. Practical, personal, and seen on every walk.

A photo book or calendar. Their best dog photos from the year, in one place.

Gifts their dog will actually use

  • A supportive bed. Orthopedic or bolster beds are a real upgrade for older or large dogs.
  • Puzzle toys and lick mats. Good for rainy days, busy owners and anxious dogs.
  • A car seat cover or hammock. For anyone who drives with their dog.
  • A good harness or a hands-free leash. For runners and hikers, a hands-free leash changes the walk.
  • A dog-safe paw balm and a proper towel. Small, useful, and very welcome in winter.

Ask quietly about size and what the dog already has. A bed that's too small becomes a very nice doorstop.

Small gifts under $25

  • A long-lasting chew or a puzzle toy
  • A framed print of a favorite photo of their dog
  • A paw balm and a microfiber towel
  • A donation in their dog's name to a local rescue, with a card
  • A digital portrait file of their dog for a phone background ($24.99 from us)

For the dog mom or dog dad who has everything

  • Time. Offer a day of dog-walking or dog-sitting so they can go somewhere dogs can't.
  • An experience together. A dog-friendly cabin weekend, a training class, or a day at a dog beach.
  • A portrait for the wall. Most dog people have hundreds of photos on their phone and none framed.
  • A gift card. A portrait gift card lets them choose their favorite photo themselves; ours never expire.

If their dog has died

A gift after a loss is different. The ones people keep are gentle and personal: a framed photo, a portrait from a favorite photo, or a donation in the dog's name. See our pet memorial gift ideas and what to say when someone loses a pet.

How to choose

  • Think about their dog. Size, age and energy matter more than the price.
  • Get the photo quietly. For anything with the dog's face, pick a photo they've already shared, or ask someone close to them. A clear face in daylight works best.
  • Match the lifestyle. Hikers want gear; homebodies want a better bed; commuters want a car cover.
  • When in doubt, go small and useful, with a handwritten note about their dog.

A Stillbrook portrait of their dog

Our portraits are made from a photo you already have, in soft Watercolor, Royal or Floral style. Each one is a digital illustration made with AI tools, checked by a person on our team, and printed to order on canvas, as a framed print or as an unframed paper print. It is not painted by hand.

  • You see the portrait free before you pay, so you'll know it looks like their dog.
  • Paper prints from $49 and canvas from $89.99, with free standard shipping in the US. Add a gift message; prices are never on the packing slip.
  • Up to three pets in one portrait: a second pet is $10, each pet after that $20.
  • For Christmas 2026, order by December 9 (December 7 if you ask for a change to the preview). After that, a digital file (by December 22) or a gift card (any time).

Giving it as a gift? A gift card lets them choose the photo.

Questions people ask

What is a good gift for a dog lover who has everything?

Something about their own dog, like a portrait from a favorite photo, a custom ornament or an engraved collar. Or give time and experiences: a day of dog-sitting, a training class, or a dog-friendly weekend away.

What should I get a dog mom?

A personal gift with her dog's face or name, such as a portrait or a framed photo, or something that makes daily life with her dog easier, like a supportive bed, a car seat cover or a hands-free leash.

What is a good cheap gift for a dog lover?

A long-lasting chew or puzzle toy, paw balm and a good towel, a framed photo of their dog, or a donation to a rescue in their dog's name. A digital portrait file of their dog is $24.99 from us.

Are personalized gifts good for dog lovers?

Usually the best kind. A gift with their own dog's face or name shows you pay attention to what matters to them, and it tends to be kept for years.

Can I get a portrait of two dogs together?

Yes. With Stillbrook you can put up to three pets in one portrait, even from separate photos. Add a second pet for $10, more for $20 each.

When should I order a custom dog portrait for Christmas?

For Stillbrook, order a canvas or framed print by December 9, or by December 7 if you ask for a change to the preview. After that, a digital file or a gift card still arrives by email in time.
